and this time was taken to Southampton Yacht Services for a re-build, before starting a world tour, that saw her race against both Shamrock V and Endeavour at Antigua Classic Week in 1998, another signifi cant step in the re-birth of the J-Class. The fi rst rumours that a new J-Class might be built surfaced in 1999, the talk was of plans to create a replica of the greatest J of them all, Ranger, which was often referred to as the “super J”, the successful defender of the Cup in 1937. Then, in 2000, the owners of the current Js met in England and formed the J Class Association, to protect the interest of the class, present and future. Class rules were established for the construction of replica re-builds from original plans. The three restored boats sailed together in British
waters for the fi rst time in 2001, when the fi rst J-Class regatta in England since the war was sailed in Christchurch Bay, after which they all attended the America’s Cup Jubilee in Cowes. In 2003 history was made when the replica of Ranger was launched 66 years after the original hit the water, the fi rst boat in the new era of the class, under the same name as the last one from the old era of the class. She was built at the Danish Yacht shipyard in Skagen, Denmark, and since launching has joined the fl eet of existing Js for a number of regattas, winning the Sardinia Maxi Yacht Regatta in 2007 and 2008. With two more new Js launched since Ranger, the
fl eet has doubled in size from the three originals, and there are three more still under construction, with another having line plans approval. In March 2009 Hanuman was lowered into the
