EXECUTIVE NOTES By Rich Bender, Executive Director
RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS AND ADVANCEMENTS It has been a busy and productive time for USA Wrestling,
and we have some positive news which I would like to share with our members. Many of these exciting developments will help us to advance the sport in our nation. There have been a number of new projects and activities
which will expand our program offerings for young wrestlers and help us to improve our developmental activities. They include: * USOC approval for a Freestyle Developmental Program at
the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The program where top high school graduates come to train at the OTC prior to going to col- lege is now an approved and permanent program. Next year, stars Destin McCauley and Tanner Hall will be in this program. * USA Wrestling sent FILA Junior teams to compete in Europe
this winter, helping better prepare many top young stars. It was the first FILA Junior winter tour for freestyle, and the Greco- Roman team was able to attend two tournaments this year. * There will be a FILA Cadet World Championships for the
first time since 1999, set for Hungary. The USA will determine its teams at the FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron for boys, and the Body Bar Nationals in Kissimmee for girls. * Another new event, the FILA Junior World Cup, has been introduced and will be in Germany. The USA qualified teams for this event, which helps in our developmental efforts. We are also pleased with the success of our Senior teams
during the winter tour season. At press time, our women’s team placed a strong second at the Women’s World Cup held in France, just one match away from beating China in the finals. The United States won numerous medals during the winter
tour season, as athletes in all three Olympic styles traveled around the world for high-level competition. I would like to commend the Team USA wrestlers who won gold medals for our nation this year and the nation where they won, which include the following: * Men’s freestyle: Andy Hrovat (Russia), Tervel Dlagnev (Russia), Tommy Rowlands (Cuba), Shawn Bunch (Belarus) * Women’s freestyle: Adeline Gray (Bulgaria), Tatiana Padilla

(France) * Greco-Roman: Harry Lester (Cuba), Dremiel Byers (Cuba). The U.S. also had five champions at
our highly competitive Dave Schultz Memorial, with golds from Joe Betterman, Harry Lester and Jake Fisher in Greco- Roman, Steve Mocco in men’s freestyle and Deanna Rix in women’s freestyle. Our membership numbers are running
at a record pace for the 2010-11 membership year. Our February reports showed an increase in all of the membership categories. Although we can’t predict our final statistics at this time, it is very promising. We can feel good that we are reach- ing more young people with our events, programs and activities than ever before. USA Wrestling partnered with our Oregon association with a
great program in November. The USA Wrestling “Making A Difference Tournament” had over 1,000 athletes. USA Wrestling sponsored awards and gave free memberships for the day. Over $10,000 was raised for college wrestling in Oregon. USA Wrestling has scheduled the New Jersey Night of Champions, in cooperation with USA Soccer, in New Jersey on April 21. There will also be a special function in Colorado on May 20, along with USA Judo, where we will honor wrestling leaders Scott Beck and Arno Niemand.
THE LEGACY OF THE LATE VINCE ZUARO I would like to honor one of the longtime leaders in our organ-
ization, Dr. Vince Zuaro, who passed away at the age of 84 in March. Vince was a spectacular mat official, who also served as a mentor for many other referees. He was a founder of the U.S. Wrestling Officials Association, and worked five Olympic Games and most of the major events in the world. The room which honors referees at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is named in his honor. Last September, he was the first U.S. referee to be inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame. Vince made a major contribution to the sport and will be missed by his many friends from all around the World.
