Competition will be held in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. FILA Juniors are athletes who are 17-20 years old. This is the qualifying event for the 2011
FILA Junior World Championships, set for Bucharest, Romania, July 26-31. A number of past FILA Junior World
Team members are eligible to compete again this year. Among the stars back is 2010 Junior World bronze medalist Ellis Coleman, (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) who competed at 145 pounds in Greco-Roman last year. Coleman is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete. Two members of the 2010 Junior World freestyle team who both placed fifth in the Junior Worlds are eligible to return: Nick Roberts, (Hooversville, Pa./Young Guns) at 110 pounds and Jeremy Johnson, (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Bobcat WC) at 264 pounds. U.S. TO FIELD CADET WORLD TEAMS IN ALL THREE STYLES The international wrestling federation
FILA has revived the Cadet World Championships after more than a decade without hosting the event. FILA Cadets are athletes who are 15-
17 years old. The 2011 FILA Cadet World Championships will be held in Szombethely, Hungary, August 25-28, 2011. The event will feature competition in the three Olympic disciplines of wrestling: men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. The U.S. Cadet World teams in men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman will be deter- mined at the 2011 ASICS FILA Cadet National Championships in Akron, Ohio, April 20-23. The event will be held at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Fieldhouse at the University of Akron. Athletes competing in the FILA Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals will weigh in on Wednesday, April 20 and compete on Thursday, April 21. Athletes competing in the FILA Cadet Freestyle Nationals will weigh in on Thursday, April 21, and compete on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23. Wrestlers may try out for the U.S.
Cadet World Team in both styles. This event is held alongside the University National Championships. The U.S. Cadet World Team in women’s freestyle will be determined at the 2011 Women’s Body Bar National Championships in Kissimmee, Florida, May 13-15. The event will be held at Osceola Heritage Park – Silver Spurs Arena. Women athletes competing in the Body
Bar FILA Cadet Nationals will weigh in on Friday, May 13 and compete on Saturday, May 14. There will be a best-of-three finals series between the two women’s finalists in the FILA Cadet weight classes to determine the U.S. representative for the World Team.
This event is held alongside the Body
Bar FILA Junior Nationals, as well as the Body Bar Kids Nationals. Both of these events have been popu-
lar in the past, with large and talented field of competitors. It is expected to con- tinue to grow and improve with spots on the U.S. FILA Cadet World Team up for grabs. The last year which the Cadet World Championships were hosted was in 1999. That year, U.S. wrestlers winning Cadet World titles were Justin Lester in men’s freestyle and Mary Kelly in women’s freestyle. Both have since competed on U.S. Senior World Teams, with Lester winning two World bronze medals in Greco-Roman. The U.S. has a long history of success
in FILA Cadet World Championships, going back to mid-1970s. There have been 26 Cadet World men’s freestyle champions from the United States, 17 Cadet World Greco-Roman champions from the United States and two Cadet World champions in women’s freestyle from the United States.
