technology products software updated design software

Synopsys has released v10.3 of Code V, its optical design and analysis software package. The release delivers new design and analysis capabilities that enable optical designers to take advantage of the unique image quality and cost benefits that aspheres offer. Aspheric surface shapes are

used to help reduce or eliminate imperfect or blurred images in optical systems. While surfaces with spherical shapes are easier to make, many more spherical

App for thermal camera

Flir has released Flir Viewer, an app that uses a thermal imaging camera’s built-in Wi-Fi capability to enable it to connect easily to an iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone. Once connected, a Flir thermal imaging camera can send images and other data to an Apple mobile device wirelessly. The app lets users download

images from their camera, change colour palettes, analyse the images, add data, create reports, upload to ‘the cloud’ and e-mail thermal images to other

surfaces are generally needed to reduce image blurring compared to aspheric surfaces. Hence, an aspheric lens can be used to replace multiple spherical lenses. www.synopsys.com

VPIphotonics has released VPIcomponentMaker Photonic Circuits – a software tool for designing, analysing and optimising large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs). It can be applied to a variety of active and passive devices and PIC design tasks. Highly integrated PICs are constructed from fundamental photonic elements, such as active and passive waveguides, directional couplers, branches, MMIs, star couplers and micro-ring resonators. VPIcomponentMaker Photonic

Circuits supports indium-phosphate and silicon photonics applications including: semiconductor lasers and LEDs (e.g., tunable, injection- locked and unstable); active PICs, such as switches, modulators and detectors; passive PICs, such as arrayed waveguides, MMI-based (de)multiplexer, delay lines and filters; and device characteristics on

colleagues. There are a series of images that can be downloaded to the application so that user can experience the functionality of the application for free, even without a camera. The app is available from the Apple iTunes Store. www.flir.com

systems level (e.g., impact of noise, chirp and bandwidth). VPIcomponentMaker Photonic

Circuits combines and extends VPIphotonics’ active-device modelling capabilities with PIC elements for complete subsystem design and support of TM and TE guided modes. Simulation of the full longitudinal

and spectral dynamics of lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers with detailed control over device geometry and material characteristics ensures both the accuracy and flexibility to model complex device structures. Furthermore, the newly

introduced S-matrix approach for modelling passive components enables the efficient design of large-scale passive PICs in frequency domain and active or dynamically tunable PICs in time domain. www.vpiphotonics.com

laser systems Welding station

Trumpf has launched its new TruLaser Station 3003 for users who are interested in small and medium batch laser welding. If the application requires a pulsed laser, such as for welding temperature- sensitive components, users can select a TruPulse laser. Disc, diode or fibre lasers up to an output power of 1,000W can be combined with the TruLaser Station 3003 to weld lap joints in heat exchangers, for example. Another use includes removing

layers or stripping semiconductors, in which case the microprocessing laser from the TruMicro Series can be installed in the laser workstation. The TruLaser Station 3003 works

economically and with minimal auxiliary processing times due to its

programmable focusing optics (PFO 20/ PFO 33); an integrated scanning optic makes this possible by ensuring that neither the workpiece nor the optic have to be moved for processing. Despite its compact dimensions

of 860 x 2,000 x 1,310mm, the laser workstation has a large working volume of 300 x 300 x 500mm. www.trumpf.com
