LEADER WARREN CLARK
Defence leads the way
Photonics, like many other technology-led industries, frequently takes its lead from the needs of the military. Often, a technology that fi rst appears in use by the military fi lters down into other markets at a later date. Thermal imaging is one such example, which has now found uses in areas such as electrical fault detection in industry. For this reason, SPIE Defense, Security and Sensing, held in Orlando in April, is often a great place to see where technology may be headed. We preview that show in this issue (see page 24), while on page 10, Stephen Mounsey explores the military applications currently under development. Another cutting edge area is that of
attosecond lasers, which is the focus of Nadya Anscombe’s feature on page 16. There are several exciting research projects underway in this area throughout the word. Elsewhere, Greg Blackman takes a
closer look at wavefront analysis (page 20), paying particular attention to the work the technology does in the fi eld of ophthalmics, where it helps locate and diagnose diseases of the retina. Keep a look out for our next issue, due
on your desks in early May, as it will contain an extensive preview of the upcoming Laser World of Photonics exhibition, as well as exciting news about our fi rst ever webcast.
