Aluminium breadboard

Newport has expanded its offering of low-cost aluminium breadboards and accessories for basic photonic research and OEM optical assemblies. The SA2 series of solid aluminium breadboards now includes more diverse sizes and vertical bracket accessories to provide a stable yet lightweight platform for optical components and sub-assemblies. The series sizes include 6 x 24-inch, 6 x

36-inch, 12 x 36-inch, and 24 x 36-inch, offering flexibility for optical experiments. Features include a standard grid of tapped holes that extends to within 0.5-inches of the plate edges, providing more mounting surface than other products. The SA2 also features ‘in-grid’ counter-bored holes and deep edge chamfers that make lifting, aligning and integrating the SA2 onto standard optical tables easy. The new SA2-BRKT series vertical brackets

are offered in three sizes to accommodate a wide range of needs. The smallest bracket measures 6-inches in height and is recommended for 6-inch and 8-inch tall SA2 plates. The mid-range bracket measures 12-inches in height and is perfect for 12-inch SA2 plates. Newport’s largest size is also the largest available in the industry, according to the company, and measures 18 inches. www.newport.com

Andor Technology has launched its iStar USB 2.0 platform for nanosecond time-resolved spectroscopy and imaging. The iStar series extracts the best performance from CCD and image intensifier technologies for high speed, high sensitivity and highly precise acquisition timing sequences. Superior characterisation of dynamic and fast

transient kinetic phenomena is achieved through iStar’s high-speed 5MHz readout platform and ultrafast, ultra-low jitter gating electronics. The platform exhibits spectral rates of 3,400 spectrum/s and imaging rates greater than 15 full frames/s, alongside optical gating times of <2ns. iStar’s latest generation of all-integrated,

Fibre optics

Mode converter fibre coupler JK Lasers (part of the GSI group) has released its new mode converter fibre coupler (MCFC), developed to provide flexibility to users of the company’s fibre laser products. The MCFC takes a Gaussian-profile, single-mode fibre input from any of the company’s fibre lasers and couples it into a JK Luminator fibre, allowing for the use of the full range of the company’s fibre lasers with its established JK Luminator line of process tools. The output from the JK Luminator fibre has

a uniform flat-top beam profile and a beam diameter of 150-600µm depending on the

electronics

Miniature high-voltage digital bias control modules

Laser Components has introduced a range of miniature high-voltage digital bias control (dBC) modules, well suited to controlling avalanche photodiodes and fast PIN photodiodes. Three models of dBC are available; the dBC-

120-3V is suitable for InGaAs APDs and very fast PIN photodiodes, the dBC-220-3V is a universal controller for silicon APDs, and the dBC-380- 5V is suitable for large-area APDs. All versions feature a compact design and nickel-plated

metal housings (21 x 21 x 10mm). In addition, the temperature coefficient of the output voltage can be adjusted precisely to match the properties of the corresponding APD. Discrete APDs or APD modules can both be operated, even with an integrated temperature sensor. The output current is limited to a safe maximum

value of 0.8mA to effectively protect the APD from overloading. The output voltage is adjusted either by analogue or digital control using a programming interface for the microcontroller. www.lasercomponents.com

configuration selected by the user. Focused spot sizes in the range of 60-1,500µm can be selected by use of the appropriate Luminator process tools. The company states that use of the MCFC

can bring processing advantages to welding applications, in which the small spot size of the Gaussian beam are not optimal. Featuring a detachable output fibre and the company’s Plug-In Pre-Aligned (PIPA) technology for rapid changeovers, the MCFC offers increased versatility to the user at a fraction of the cost of a second laser. www.gsiglasers.com

software-controlled Digital Delay Generator (DDG) provides a comprehensive, accurate and user-friendly multi-triggering interface, allowing complex experiment integration and synchronisation. High QE image intensifiers combine with

500kHz photocathode repetition rate, -40°C TE cooling and dry gas purge for effective EBI noise removal, to offer excellent signal-to-noise performance for photon-starved, nanosecond to microsecond time-resolved applications. The combination with Andor’s Shamrock series

and LIBS-dedicated Mechelle spectrograph provides high performance, fully-integrated spectroscopy detection solutions. www.andor.com
