Superman Escape from Krypton

Six Flags Magic Mountain has officially unveiled the new look to its Superman freefall coaster. Superman: Escape from Krypton, formerly Superman The Escape, now features new cars reversing the direction of travel. The Intamin-built construction sends riders from 0-100mph (160km/h) in seven seconds as they shoot backwards up a 415ft (126-netres) L- shaped tower. The ride then leaves passengers hanging for several seconds of weightlessness before they plummet back to earth face first.

The new, sleeker-looking cars were supplied by IntaRide and travel along a repainted vibrant blue and red with a yellow track, with a giant Superman “S” shield at the top that can been seen for miles away. The ride's two 14-seater vehicles are blasted from the loading station using state-of-the-art electro-magnetic motors.

Six Flags Magic Mountain is based in Valencia, California, north of Los Angeles.

Tivoli tweaks prices

Children under the age of eight can now visit Tivoli for free, while parents can enjoy reduced price admission until the start of start of the school summer holidays.

The classic Copenhagen amusement park and gardens is currently offering adult entry for DKK 75 ($14/€10), which rises to the old price of DKK 95 on July 1, or DKK125 after 8pm on Fridays.

As always, visitors must buy tickets once inside to enjoy the park’s rides and attractions, but these too have been revised. For a long time, Tivoli has wanted to abandon the principle of age differentiation as the visitors’ choice of rides is not necessarily age-related. Accordingly, in 2011 the price of a multi-ride ticket will be DKK 195 ($37/€26) for everyone, regardless of age. For visitors who want to try a few rides only, ride tickets will still be available at DKK 25 per ticket ($4.75/€3.35). Admission to the Petzi's World children’s area, the Pantomime Theatre and entertainment on the Open Air Stage remain free, and guests are even encouraged bring their own picnic. The summer season starts on April 14.

ROPE COURSES DEBUT IN UK

Open time for the start of the 2011 season, Innovative Leisure has supplied two high rope adventure courses to amusement parks at opposite ends of the UK. Codona’s Amusement Park in Aberdeen, Scotland, and Clarence Pier in Southsea on the south coast of England have each added one of the attractions, fabricated by the American supplier Ropes Courses International. At Codona’s, the six-pole, triple-level Vertigo course has been installed in the centre of the park alongside the Log Flume, and is expected to have wide appeal. “We liked the concept of adding something totally different that can be enjoyed by almost any age group,” notes Alfred Codona. “We are pitching the marketing more towards the teenage/extreme market. However, we will be making it very clear to the public that they do not have to complete all three levels and that they only need to climb as high as they are comfortable with.” Down in Southsea, the Clarence Pier structure is a little shorter, but still visible from the adjacent Isle of Wight. The double-level, eight-pole ropes course incorporates a unique “walk the plank” feature and pirate theming, making it an ideal fit for its coastal location. The attraction has been named Pier Pressure – Rise to the Challenge and is large enough to cater for up to 150 guests per hour, with 35 participants able to

experience the 28 different elements at any one time. “It’s aimed at anyone over five years old and we hope it will bring in a different market that possibly wouldn’t go on the more traditional amusement rides,” comments the pier’s Jill Norman. “We are also aiming it at the corporate market.”

Zippin Pippin at Bay Beach

In our North America Season Preview in the March issue of Park World we listed the Zippin Pippin as a new attraction at Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay, Wisconsin. We would like to clarify that the wooden coaster, which formerly operated at Libertyland in Tennessee, is being rebuilt ay Bay Beach by Martin & Vleminckx, with engineering advice from The Gravity Group. We apologise for any confusion and are pleased to bring you this photo of the ride taking shape at Bay Beach.
