Internet search engines have become central to our everyday lives (I found it quite eye-opening recently to make a note of all the web searches I did in just one day). This trend has changed user expectations about how they fi nd information, and is a recurring theme in this issue of Research Information. On pages 18 to 20 we look at discovery tools, which enable libraries and their users to search across the resources they subscribe to from one platform. In a similar vein, the interviews about e-books on pages 22 to 25 reveal the important role that e-book aggregators play in offering e-book content from many publishers, in different packages and with different business models to suit the users. I will be looking at the role of aggregators and other trends in e-books again on 11 May when I speak at the E-books and E-content 2011 conference in London (see diary on page 33).
