Grassroots: Thunder Bay 2nd Annual Kayak Rodeo & Festival Lakehead University Students Union and Lakehead University Club of Kayakers will be
hosting Thunder Bays’ second annual kayak rodeo and festival on Saturday October the 5th 2002. This one-day event provides an opportunity for LU students and local paddlers to come together and for non-local paddlers to check out the North Shore of Lake Superior action.
The festival takes place at Crooked Rapids, a popular 400 metre section of the Kam River. The river is located just 30 minutes north of Thunder Bay and the Trans-Canada Highway on Dawson Rd. From Dawson turn right at Silver Falls Road and drive until you can’t miss it; the river is on the left and the cars will be lin- ing the ditches.

ROB CARTWRIGHT Brooks Sponsored Paddler
Tenacious grip, durable materials,
dry seams and great prices. With Brooks sprayskirts you can focus on your paddling and forget about your gear!
The competition is held at a wave and a hole but competition is a small part of the Thunder Bay Festival. Paddlers try new boats, canoeists try kayaks and kayakers try open boats. Last year the judges were non-paddlers who were given a crash course on what the expected moves look like. They scored each of three rides on a scale from one to ten—how the ride looked to a spectator was more important than technical difficulty. There were no electronic billboards or instant replays, just shouting and cheering and win- ning rides from multiple spins and blunts to spectacular flushes. There will be music, food and high water. Thunder Bay Hydro is gracious enough to
release water for the event to bring the river to an optimal playing level. Local merchants are very supportive supplying prizes for all the classes: open boat, C-1 and a K-1 for both women and men. Paddlers on their way out west or east should book this festival into their plans. Contact Craig Brunton
