 At last year’s event the big moves were blunts. This year if you weren’t throwing aerial tricks you weren’t placing. The scoring system was set up to encour- age competitors to go big—anything inverted like donkey flips and helixes were awarded an extra four technical point plus variety points.

 Twenty-one juniors competed in the Garberator Rodeo. Some junior scores would have placed them in the men’s class, but for Nick Troutman the rodeo marked his 22nd day kayaking… ever!

 Ideal water levels and a relaxed pre–team trials atmosphere allowed athletes like Tyler Curtis to go huge for the crowds. To keep things simple there was only one variety and one technical judge. Competitors got three 30-second chances to rip it up. Their best two rides were tallied to advance them to the next round.

 Wilderness Tours Kayak School instructor Matt “Sharky” McGuire managed to crank through the 64 competitors in a one-day event. A DJ mixed the tunes and lunch was served below the Lorne at the WT Rafting lunch pavilion.
