river shorties Nude Open Canoeing Sweeps Nation

Paddling open boat took on a whole new meaning at this year’s Gull Open Canoe Race in Minden, Ontario. Nude canoeists typically limit their exposure to wilderness rivers and the privacy of their homes. But Mike Craig rocked this year’s recreational slalom canoe event by shamelessly stripping naked at the starting gate and paddling his final run through the gates with (fully clothed) partner Gail Shields.

There were initial whispers of disbelief and mur- murs about hiding the children; sun-soaked offi- cials looked to their empty water bottles wondering at what point severe dehydration leads to delu- sions. It took only a few bold supports of Craig’s pride to sway the crowd from banning him from future events to applauding and cheering him to a gunwhale handstand and an eventual swim around gate 11. 
