Ottawa River Rodeo

Labour Day Weekend

 The booths for judging and the techno-cranking DJ were located on the river-left island limiting the event to the left side of Horseshoe, the river-wide hole at the bottom of McCoy’s. Although the points were scored on the left side, the real show was on the right, where athletes like Scott Feindel snuck in between ‘real’ rides to pop mind boggling two-storey aerial loops.

Never before has there been so much action on the Ottawa River packed into back-to-back competitive weekends. In addition to the regular annual events, 2002 saw the introduction of the Liquid Skills Showdown playing host to both the U.S. and Canadian team trials.

The ninth annual Ottawa River Rodeo kicked things off on Labour Day weekend at McCoy’s. Equinox Adventures in conjunction with American Whitewater drew over 130 participants competing in Horseshoe hole for valuable points toward the Teva Championships. On the very next weekend and only a couple kilometres downriver was Wilderness Tours’ annual Garberator Rodeo. And finally, after most of us were back to work or school, Liquid Skills hosted their seven-day marathon of events culminating in the Kayak International Boater Cross through The Normans. With money, points, prestige and spots on both national teams at stake, it was an exciting September to be on the Ottawa.

 The American Whitewater Teva Tour rolled in with its electronic clock display, and the judging infrastructure operated under their new 2002 freestyle rules. The AWA supplied two judges who travelled with the Teva Tour to provide consistency and logistical support.

 When you combine the 45-second rides for com- petitors making it to finals, it totals about 6 minutes of paddling per day. With another 11 hours and 53 minutes left in the day, paddlers like Jesse Murphy had plenty of time to kick back for some adventures in Middle Earth.
