SW River Shorties

Ken Whiting, one of the founding partners of the Liquid Skills Kayak School, has left the Liquid Skills team to pursue his other ventures. Whiting: “With a bunch of new book and video projects in the works, and a bigger and better Freeboat Tour being planned for next year, I realized that I no longer had time to dedicate to Liquid Skills."... The State of New York no longer considers large-scale hydroelectricity as a green and renewable energy resource and excludes it from its list of main tier eligible generation sources. Only hydropower from small run-of-river power plants will be eligible. Quebec’s hydroelectricity no longer meets these standards. Rupert Reverence, a group of Cree and Quebec citizens dedicated to the protection of Northern Quebec rivers, hopes Hydro-Quebec gets a new and strong incentive to end its hydroelectric development in James Bay and Northern Quebec... Dagger and Yakima join Mystic Surfboards, Patagonia, Santa Cruz bicycles and Trinity Springs Water on this summer’s Clif Bar Natural Energy Tour. Clif Bar will send a retrofitted 22-foot-long, modified city bus, that runs entirely on B100 bio-diesel fuel, from Tampa to Boston from June through Labour Day to educate people about global warming and encourage support for the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act, a US bill aimed at reducing industry-generated greenhouse gases... On May 29th, Billy Harris, Necky team paddler and Canadian Freestyle Team captain, paddled the previously unrun waterfall, Anna's Slide. Anna's Slide is located southeast of Montreal, Canada. It’s a 70-foot slide into a narrow 15-foot waterfall. The run was filmed by CBC producer Ben Aylsworth and photographed by Seattle photographer Jock Bradley... Phillips Environmental Products has developed the PETT (Portable Environmental ToileT) system featuring WAG BAGS, a bio-degradable bag system that waste can be directly deposited into, safely transported, and

legally disposed of in any garbage can. Why is this in Rapid? The PETT toilet is being distributed by NRS and according to John Bales, marketing director, it’s perfect for canoe and raft supported kayak trips in sensitive areas. The PETT is shown here with the PUP privacy tent... The Paddler Co-op has created its Paddlers’ Info & Message Centre at its Palmer Rapids campground and boathouse. The Centre includes: directions to local river access; river levels (the dam guy actually stops and updates the board), free phone, and a blackboard for notes to friends. Matt Cruchet,

acting executive director, says, “The Message Centre is our first step in creating a hub for paddlers in the Madawaska Valley”. 
