Sieves & Screens Repeat order

A prominent UK manufacturer of high grade ceramic powders for use in the medical, laser, semiconductor, defence and solar markets came to Farleygreene with an application to grade its high value raw material.

The customer required a means of decanting product from a container, through a fine mesh screen and into a small bottle underneath the machine.

The problem was screening the highly abrasive material without excessive vibration if possible. Farleygreene completed various tests on the product and found that the best solution was to use their ‘Sonotech’ ultrasonic system with no vibration from a conventional motor driven system. The product could be easily screened at 150 micron aperture with only the ultrasonic’s running.

Farleygreene then set about designing a unit around the test data to provide an easy to clean, ergonomic system. The final design needed to fit inside a small production area and provide for all the feed control that the customer required, and the consideration of the operator when tipping the powder into the unit.

The final design utilised a dusthood assembly at the top, feeding into an integral hopper terminating in a hygienic manual butterfly valve. This allowed the operator to tip the entire contents into the hopper and then open the valve to meter the product on to the screen below. Next the sieving operation was carried out by a 400mm diameter ultrasonic sieve unit, with quick release clamping arrangements to allow quick and easy strip down for cleaning. It was part of the design brief that the whole system should be able to be cleaned to avoid batch contamination. The sieved product then filled into a lower 20 litre hopper which terminated in a 32mm butterfly valve with funnel outlet, this created a nozzle for the operator to fill small glass bottles with the graded material.

The sieve was supplied in an all 316L mirror polished execution with full 3.1B certification as well as validation documentation.

The first unit was so well received by the customer that more units are now required across the group’s sites.
