Driving apprenticeships In brief
Demonstrating that its long-term commitment to UK manufacturing apprenticeships began some time ago, Leeds-based Siemens Mechanical Drives’ first graduate apprentice has just come through a four-year course with flying colours.
Mike Peate is the first apprentice in recent years to graduate at Siemens Mechanical Drives, which is part of Siemens Industry Automation and Drive Technologies. The 20-year-old from Guiseley began at Siemens in September 2006 as a 16-year-old apprentice and studied for an HNC in mechanical engineering at Bradford College, after achieving an ONC in the same subject two years into his course.
He has also achieved NVQ levels 2 and 3, and combined working towards all of these qualifications with hands-on experience gained in a broad range of manufacturing disciplines at the Siemens
factory several days a week. There he was mentored by another Siemens graduate apprentice, Richard Durham, who joined what was then Flender Power Transmission at its previous Bradford base in 1990 as an apprentice. Richard is now production and quality manager at the new Leeds facility.
Mike said of his apprenticeship: “I feel privileged to be the first of a new batch of apprentices and very proud to have done my apprenticeship at a Siemens company. It has been a great learning experience.”
General manager Simon Nadin commented on Mike’s graduation: “Siemens are very committed to UK manufacturing and Mike is an excellent example of the type of apprentice we want to train, keep and nurture. We’re delighted to have him on the team.” The Leeds factory currently has five apprentices on a rolling programme.
MHEA confirms conference programme MHEA has announced the programme for the 2011 Bulk Handling Conference, which takes place at Forest Pines Conference Centre, North Lincolnshire on the 11-12 May.
The event has moved from a
specifically focussed technical seminar to a more all embracing Industry Conference, and aims to broaden the delegate profile and include all matters relating to bulk handling with a separate provision for commercial presentations. Conference papers cover all aspects of materials handling including developments in conveying, handling biomass fuel, spillage and dust control and drives and transmissions. RWM & Futuresource joins forces The organisers of the Recycling and Waste Management (RWM) exhibition and Futuresource are combining the two exhibitions into one new event from 2011. The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) and the Environmental Services Association (ESA), the organisers of Futuresource, and Emap, the organisers of RWM, have been listening to market feedback and are responding to customer views that the UK recycling and waste management market needs one major exhibition.
