This life Q Where do you live and why?
A I live in Grafham, Surrey which is a tiny village – just a church and a cricket green. I have an incredible view and easy access to loads of public footpaths and bridleways.
Q Which storage companies have you worked at and how long for?
A IBM for thirteen years, Amdahl for 1 year and HDS for 22. Oh and I worked for Challiss, a removal company when I was 16, they also had storage facilities J
Q What is your life philosophy?
A It’s all about the people. We can do loads with technology and process but ultimately it’s the people that make the difference.
Q Who do you admire in your professional life?
A Our CTO, Hu Yoshida. He has an incredibly incisive view of our industry and how it will develop and can articulate it better than anyone I know.
Q What storage technology development has made the most difference to your job – and how?
A There are so many but I guess RAID protection allowed us to stop worrying about simple disk failures and really start building value into storage systems.
Q What are your extravagances?
A I really end up funding my wife. She has a habit of rescuing distressed animals. I’ve come home to a Llama, an alpaca, donkeys, lambs as well as the odd pony.
Q Where were the last 3 places you went on holiday?
38
Tony Reid
Region Manager – UK, Ireland, Middle East, Turkey and Africa, Hitachi Data Systems
A Egypt, Turkey and Cyprus – I love to run when it’s really hot.
Q What were the last books you bought?
A The Stieg Larsson trilogy. I’m half way through The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest. I’m ashamed to say that I spend more time reading email than fiction though.
Q What do you think are your greatest strengths in the workplace?
A Getting the best out of the people around me. Q Favourite sport?
A I love to run, I like to watch rugby and I wish I could play golf.
Q What are your weaknesses?
A My Grandson – he can do no wrong in my eyes.
Q Favourite musical artist? A Bryan Ferry - takes me back to my teens.
Q What one possession would you take to a desert island?
A My iPad
Q Which one person would you most like to meet (alive or dead), and what would you ask them?
A Roger Bannister. Why the 4 minute mile over any other sporting milestone?
Q What are your current projects?
A At home, I’m trying to get fit after a knee injury. At work, getting ready for our next financial year which I intend to be the most significant in the last ten.
