SNIA Europe Academies
SNIA Europe Datacenter Technologies Academy, hits the road in Abu Dhabi, next stop London.
The first of the SNIA Europe Datacenter Technologies Academy event series took place earlier this month in Abu Dhabi attracting around 100 IT professionals from the region. As usual the agenda featured a mix of materials from the wide ranging stable of SNIA materials and specific breakout session from the event’s sponsors. The agenda was opened by a presentation from Zeeshan Gaya, Senior Analyst for Servers and Storage Systems at IDC Middle East, Africa & Turkey entitled ‘The Journey to the Private Cloud’ which was followed by the SNIA keynote session ‘Building the Business Case for Clouds’ delivered by Mahesh Vaidya, CEO of ISIT and chairman of the SNIA Europe, Middle East Committee.
Other SNIA sessions included Deploying Public, Private, and Hybrid Cloud Environments; Cloud Storage Security ; Green Storage technologies – Capex and Opex; Storage Considerations for Virtual Servers; Trends in application recovery and finally Fibre Channel Futures - Convergence and FCoE. Sponsors of the Abu Dhabi event included Oracle, HP, IBM, EMC, Quantum, APTEC, NetApp, Overland Storage and ISIT.
Attention now turns to the London date, Thursday 19th May at the QEII Conference Centre in the heart of London. The agenda for the London event will again be focussed on Cloud technologies and the roles that SNIA and its members are taking in establishing key standards like the Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI).
The keynote in London will be delivered by Gary Barnett, Partner and Chief Technical Officer at the Bathwick Group. Gary’s session sets out to examine the Cloud computing promise of “Infrastructure Nirvana”, a state in which our compute requirements are fulfilled automatically and inexpensively by a cloud of machines and service providers. While the “ideal” of infrastructure that scales and responds automatically according to demand is clearly attractive, most organisations face a long and challenging journey in order to be able to take full advantage of the benefits that cloud computing offers. His presentation will talk about the steps that organisations need to take in order to move their infrastructure towards a cloud-based model and the overriding theme of the presentation is “getting fit for cloud” and the focus is on the practical things you can
10 start doing today in order to make the journey to cloud nirvana.
Backing up the keynote session from the Bathwick Group will be a number of sessions from the SNIA Europe on cloud technologies. The SNIA, through it Cloud Storage Initiative (the CSI) is at the forefront of thinking with regard to cloud computing standards to benefit of users
worldwide. The SNIA CSI is promoting the adoption of cloud storage as a new delivery model that provides elastic, on-demand storage, billed only for what is used. The simplicity of the cloud means that some long held dreams of information management are finally coming true. The emphasis has moved from managing your storage to managing your data in the cloud and at the SNIA Europe Datacenter Technologies Academy delegates will be able to learn more about the association’s latest advice and best practices in this area.
In addition the London agenda will also focus on, storage and desktop virtualisation and the impact on storage strategies; the ongoing development of Fibre Channel standards (in particular Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)); plus the regular areas of SNIA expertise such as storage resource management and data protection.
Why attend the SNIA Datacenter Technologies Academy?
