A: What about the sort of tidal wave of the online world? You are quite “interactive” there. How do you balance that in terms of both your time and the different kind of energy it involves?
R: At the risk of being repetitive, all things connect, all things have a relationship, and this holds true (for me) with my online world. Tere, I tend to my shops and studios. A big part of this encompasses seeking folks that might like what I create, and that means nurturing relationships. Tese relationships foster happy exchanges that result in sales, in cross- promoting and in friendships. I invest at least 20% of my time (sometimes more) online on these kinds of activities, primarily within my selling communities as well as facebook and twitter and a few other social networks too. I feel that if I’m managing these online activities gracefully – with balance and harmony – I’m managing them well. If I start to feel at all stressed by them, I pause (sometimes for a day or more) and start anew.
I suppose that managing the online piece of my life with everything else is supported by having a defined and integral understanding of my vision and mission. It is rare that I’ll invest time or energy in any activity – online or otherwise – that doesn’t have a connection, a relationship to my vision and mission. If it doesn’t have a connection, it will have no value, so – to my way of thinking – why bother? My sense is that this perspective prevents me from “wasting” time online.
A: In the time that I’ve been following you, I’ve seen several groupings of work - journals, art cards, stones, jewelry. Ten drawings and soaps and... the list grows. Have you moved from one new project to another, exploring a new craſt or idea as you go, or do you spiral around among certain items that you always enjoy making?
R: I spiral. Te spiral is driven by those factors that I’ve already mentioned, with Nature’s season most oſten at the heart.
