Between seven and ten acres are employed for the use of plant growing/ harvesting. Propagation and grafting are the means of creating new stock and because most plants require a little outside help for pollination, the nursery hosts a hive of bees on the property that are maintained by local beekeepers from Hungry Hill Farm in Shipman, Virginia. It seems to be both a vocation and avocation for George, who was happy to show us the flats of new strawberries, some planted on the day of our visit and others that had established themselves after a couple of weeks.
A trip outside was equally intoxicating to the senses if not as deliciously scented
as the hot house, but that, supposedly, changes with the seasons. Edible Landscaping boasts different plants during different seasons, but these beauties – those that are already outside – can be planted at any time of year. My photographer and I received a fabulous tutorial in how to care for our existing fig tree, blueberries and kiwi with plenty of visual aids planted about the place.
Edible Landscaping isn’t restricted to drive-up customers such as ourselves. The business boasts a global market with a recent shipment having gone out to Germany, and while there are restrictions with regard to which plants can be shipped where, the only other
