“Color interests me with the steel because of how rust reacts with it. I think we may be pre-programed to like certain combinations, like blues/greens with rusts. Think of landscapes with those colors. I like doing thin washes of paint, and spraying the steel with vinegar to encourage the rust to come through. That process is usually very hard, almost impossible to control, but fun to work WITH. Last year I began etching patterns into the paint, or using really wet paint and letting it run. I began fooling a bit with stencils too. I also really like finding rusted painted steel, like from old cars etc to incorporate into a piece.”
