Ninth Circuit to Rehear Antitrust Case Against California Grocery Chains


LOS ANGELES—The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth circuit Feb. 11 ordered an en banc rehearing of a case brought by the state of California charging Southern California supermarket chains with violating federal antitrust statues when the companies agreed to share profits during a 2003-2004 strike by, and lockout of, union employees during a labor dispute (California v. Safeway Inc., 9th Cir., No. 08-55671, order for en banc rehearing 2/11/11).

Predictions that employers will drop group health plan coverage when the new health care law takes full effect are overblown, but new research suggests that there will be a modest shift from employer-sponsored group health plan coverage to individual health insurance coverage, Sanjay Saxena, western region practice leader for health at Booz & Co., and co-author of a new report, told BNA Feb. 2.

Analyst’s Office Questions Gov. Brown’s Plan To Cut Compensation for State Employees


SACRAMENTO, Calif.—A budget proposal from California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) that would cut state employees’ wages and health benefits is unlikely to achieve the $580 million in savings estimated by the governor, the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office said Feb. 3.


In his fiscal year 2011-2012 budget proposal, released Jan. 10, Brown proposed the compensation cuts to help erase a $25.4 billion deficit in the current and next fiscal years (7 DLR A-10, 1/11/11).
