he Flagship Schooner Western Union of Key West returned to service this past week with a sunset sail. Shipwright John Gardner (on the cover and ashore left) returned to its deck to experience sailing the historic vessel. Te not-for-profit schooner recently

underwent a refit that took more than two years at a cost of $1 million plus. With the sup- port of many local citizens, the Florida Keys Tourist Development Counsel, the Historic Florida Keys Foundation, Historic Tours of America, First State Bank, Centennial Bank and the officials of the City of Key West, the last wooden schooner built 1939 in Key West can proudly announce the schooner is sailing once again. Te Board of Directors of the Schooner Western Union Preservation Society thank everyone involved in the project. Special mention goes to SWUP board members Bill Barry, treasurer, and Richard Manley, project manager, for the refit. Each gave more than devotion to SAVE the Western Union!
