Before establishing his own business he was involved in the telecommunications and data- communication sector in Ireland and export markets at senior management level. He has been a member of the SFA for over 20 years.


9. Deirdre Somers, vice-president, Federation of European Securities Exchanges (FESE)


Deirdre Somers, chief execu- tive officer of the Irish Stock Exchange (ISE), has been elected vice-president of the Federation of European Securities Exchanges (FESE). Somers has been CEO of the ISE since June 2007. A fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland, she is also a governor of University College Cork. Prior to joining the ISE, she specialised in international tax with KPMG.


Building Society and a director of Scotiabank Ireland, APS Financial and Hampshire Trust. In the past five years, she has been a director of Execution Holdings, Z Group and Legend Communications.


11. Paul Synnott, country manager, Esri Ireland


Paul Synnott has been appointed country manager, Esri Ireland. He will lead the strategy for revenue and prof- itability growth in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland markets. He will also have full operational responsi- bility for Esri Ireland’s sales, marketing and customer serv- ices operations in Ireland. Synnott was previously head of sales at Esri Ireland. Prior to joining the company, he held managerial positions in GIS companies, Paradigm Technologies and The Disc- overy Programme. He holds a higher diploma in geomatics from DIT and last year completed a sales manage- ment programme at the Irish Management Institute. He is currently undertaking an executive MBA at Henley University, London.

She joined Austar in 1999 as managing director of Austar United Broadband and in 2001 was appointed group director, strategy, technology and infra- structure for Austar Communications.


13. Mella Frewen, non-executive director, Aer Lingus


Aer Lingus has announced the appointment of Mella Frewen to its board. Frewen is director-general of the Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the EU (CIAA) and has worked in the agri-food sector in Europe for over 20 years. She has bache- lor and master of science degrees from the National University of Ireland and com- pleted a postgraduate course in marine biology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. She also holds a diploma in international operations man- agement from INSEAD.

UPC has appointed Dana Strong to the role of chief executive officer of UPC Ireland, effective from 1 May


Dr Dara FitzGerald has been appointed CEO of OncoMark. He has worked in IT and biotech- nology applications for almost 20 years. FitzGerald estab- lished BioResearch Ireland's Imaging Research Group in 1996, and in 1999 co-founded IT company, PixAlert. From 2007 to 2009, he was the US Federal Liaison for Enterprise Ireland, based in Washington DC (National Institutes of Health) and Dublin. Prior to joining OncoMark, he was a commer- cial development associate at the National Digital Research Centre.


15. Jim Jennings, head of Radio 1, RTÉ Radio


RTÉ Radio has announced the appointment of Jim Jennings as its new head of Radio 1. Jennings has worked in RTÉ for almost 20 years, most recently as executive producer of The LateLateShow.He has exten- sive current affairs experience, and has worked as executive producer on special broadcast projects like the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony in 2003 and WhoWants To BeA Millionaire?.Between 1983 and 1989 he worked on seven gen- eral elections and over 30 party conferences, for RTÉ Radio 1.


16. John Eager, CEO, Snap


John Eager has been appointed chief executive officer of Snap. Eager is a chartered account- ant, having qualified in 1995 with BDO Simpson Xavier in Dublin. He has an MBA from the University of New Hampshire in the US. He has extensive experience in the print industry. His experience also includes financial man- agement of technology compa- nies in Ireland and general management in a distribution business in Dublin. He was interim managing director at Buy&Sellafter its rescue from receivership.
