(Top to bottom) Robar, Vang and Wilson shotguns are solid home-defense choices.

ammo mounted in or on the shotgun is the side-mounted TacStar sidesaddle that is available just about everywhere online. The very effective and func- tional small-rail-replacement fore- arms that allow for the SureFire X300 (my choice) white light to be mounted could be helpful in home defense.

The Rifle This system is the most complex and

least affordable of the three firearms available to the public for purchase. Bluntly, an AR platform of any merit is going around $1,000+/-. Also depend- ing on where you live, like in Califor- nia, the rifle may not be available or compliant. I checked on Impact Guns, Smith & Wesson, DPMS, Daniel De- fense, Bushmaster, Noveske, Colt and Rock River Arms; all these rifles fall into this price range depending on options and so forth. This is a simple rifle that has morphed into a complex, overweight and over decorated rifle. A

rifle should have dependability, sights you can see, a decent but NOT damn match wheel and spool trick trigger trash thing. The rifle might need a small rail for a white light, so you can see what you are shooting. It should be lightweight and mobile, to go through doorways and around corners, con- sidering you’ll probably use it inside a house or urban like environment … most of you are not in Afghanistan or Iraq or Viet-frigging-nam … you are in America. If you use this rifle you’ll probably go before a Grand Jury (ex- cept maybe in Texas) and you will need to justify your fear and your reason- ing for tagging this always innocent and supposed threat with a rifle inside your house.

Others? Back on track, another consider-

ation is the very much improved over the years Ruger Ranch rifle, also in the $1,000 range, at least it fits the rifle

“rules” of some states and is a solid rifle for defense. For bigger guns or different types of guns, the Spring- field M1A is an option if you want a .308, and it is America and California compliant. Be aware of some versions of the AK-47 rifles, they almost al- ways work and are often less money if you can overlook a perceived or real negative image. If money and image be damned, then the Kreb’s Custom AK is hands down the best built AK in America. Don’t blow off lever-action rifles

for home defense, as they are usually pretty good calibers, they are ambi- dextrous and they don’t look like black “assault” guns. I have seen some good marksmanship

and manipulation

work done with lever actions in school and in the field. Last but not least, they are often reasonably priced. The rifle should work/function and

it should have a good trigger of about 3.5 to 4 lbs for defense use. The rifle

Mixed bag of handguns … all are probably good choices, just buy one that works.
