Bluffton, South Carolina
SITUATED ON A BLUFF overlooking the May River, Bluffton continues to be one of South Caro- lina’s fastest growing small towns. Its population has soared to nearly 15,000 since the 2000 census, largely due to its temperate climate, afford- able housing and low cost of living. At one time a tiny community
along the South Carolina coast, the city annexed 32,000 acres and instantly became the fifth largest municipality in the Palmetto State, based on land area. Tat land will be developed, but city officials and residents are committed to maintain- ing the town’s rich historic heritage. Settled in 1825, Bluffton was a
popular vacation spot for wealthy rice and cotton planters intent on escaping the heat and insects ram- pant in nearby Savannah, Georgia. Because of its prime deep-water location, Bluffton quickly gained importance as a shipping channel.

what is now known as the Secession Oak to discuss the pros and cons of leaving the Union. Sixteen years later, in 1860, South Carolina became the first state to declare its independence from the United States. Te town’s long-standing and
well-earned reputation for seces- sionist rhetoric led to its complete destruction at the hands of an overwhelming force of Union soldiers on June 4, 1863. By the time the
dust had settled, dozens of churches, homes and other buildings had all but disappeared. Today, Bluffton is a thriving
and fast-growing community, at- tracting people of vastly different backgrounds and occupations, from artists to scientists. Many of them see Bluffton as a more affordable alter- native to the higher-priced housing in nearby Hilton Head Island and Savannah. With its increase in population, the city has experienced a similar increase in its number of retail, grocery and restaurant outlets. Sportsmen enjoy Bluffton’s
proximity to both freshwater and saltwater fishing, while landlub- bers can choose from a variety of activities, such as golf on one of two dozen nearby courses. Bluffton is just a short drive from the beaches, fine dining and shopping available on Hilton Head Island and in the historic city of Savannah.
