Titusville, Florida
IN THE DECADE FOLLOWING the Civil War, legend tells us, two men faced off in a game of dominoes, each seeking the right to stamp his name forever onto the map of central Florida. Col. Henry Theodore Titus emerged a winner that day over Capt. Clark Rice, and, as a result, a growing city along the Space Coast has been known as Titusville since 1873. Titus, a Confederate officer, arrived in what was then called Sand Point, along the Indian River near the Atlantic coast, in 1867. He and his wife, Mary, built the town’s first hotel and donated land for its first courthouse and churches. They also helped lay out many of Sand Point’s streets and opened an avenue for economic growth by connecting the St. Johns and Indian Rivers with wagons pulled by mules. If Rice had been better or luckier at dominoes, the Titus family’s contributions to the town’s success might have been only a long-forgotten

footnote in Florida history. Today, Titusville clings to the past while celebrating the present and future. Its historic downtown area is a collection of shops offering arts and crafts, clothing, gifts and flowers, and antiques, alongside several popular restaurants. But Titusville is just northwest of the Kennedy Space Center and is sometimes known by its nickname of Space City, USA. Meanwhile, just 40 miles to the west is Orlando, home of Disney World and other attractions that draw crowds from across the United States and around the world. There’s much to do in Titusville besides watching space shuttles soar skyward. The Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum, in addition to chronicling the history of aviation, offers rides in a C-47 that helped turn the tide of World War II; the U.S. Space Walk of Fame honors the people who have served in the astronaut
program, those who have been hailed as heroes, as well as the men and women who worked behind the scenes to make space exploration a reality; and the Veterans Memorial, dedicated to all who have served in the U.S. armed forces, consists of 11 granite monuments, 10 of them representing major conflicts from the American Revolution to Desert Storm. The eleventh is the Peace Monument. Other area attractions are the
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Police Hall of Fame, the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary and the Canaveral National Seashore, located on a pristine barrier island and offering an undeveloped beach and the opportunity to get a close look at a wide range of plants and animals. If you are more into doing than watching, recreational opportunities include fishing, boating, canoeing, surfing, swimming, hiking, camping and navigating nature and historical trails.
