Kingsland, Georgia
TUCKED IN THE SOUTHEAST corner of Georgia, not far from the Florida state line and the Atlantic Ocean, Kingsland is all about the outdoors. The town is surrounded by opportunities soak up the bounty of Nature, conveniently located within easy driving distance of local, state and national parks, several rivers and streams and more than a few highly-touted golf courses.
Kingsland is in Camden
County, which was settled by both the English and the Spanish as early as the mid-15th century and is one of Georgia’s eight original counties. The town is named for John King, owner of the largest plantation in the area a half-century or so after the colony was granted its charter by King George II of England. Today, Kingsland is known
more for its proximity to outdoor recreation opportunities than for its
contributions to U.S. and Georgia history. A short drive and a short ferry ride away, Cumberland Island National Seashore offers a 17-mile- long beach and the opportunity to watch wild ponies graze in the dunes. Other popular outdoor activities include hiking or biking along 50 miles of trails through maritime forests, wetlands, historic districts and marsh ecosystems; camping for beginners as well as for veterans of the wilderness; stream, lake, shore and deep-sea fishing, as well as gathering shrimp and crabs from the island’s marsh areas; public hunts during Georgia’s hunting seasons; unobstructed stargazing from the island’s beaches and open fields; watching the 335 species of birds that have been seen on Cumberland Island; and beachcombing in search of shark’s teeth and a wide variety of shells. All these activities provide an
endless stream of opportunities for photography. Other parks in the Kingsland
area include Crooked River State Park, which offers a Nature center, a putt-putt course, picnic shelters, cottages to rent, a playground and opportunities to fish, hike and bike; Colonial Coast Birding Trail, where more than 300 species of birds have been known to visit; and Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge, where you can take a guided boat tour or bring your own canoe. Either way, you’ll see hundreds of different birds and animals. And if golf is your game,
Trident Lakes Golf Club, located at the submarine base at Kings Bay and once open only to military personnel, is now available to the general public. Designed by Arthur Hills, the course features fairways bordered by dense, native trees and a wide range of wildlife.
