Hot Tearing of Aluminum Alloys– A Critical Literature Review

S. Li and D. Apelian Metal Processing Institute Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA, USA

Reviewer: The paper brings out nicely the wide range of models, testing equipment and results that have been ob- tained in the field over the years. Many of the apparently differing results and clearly differing models described in the paper will no doubt someday be rationalized on the ba- sis of solidification variables specific to the particular test employed. Hopefully as this study proceeds, some of these

disparate results and models will be seen to fit into a broader, overarching model.

Authors: This paper is intended to be a critical liter- ature review on hot tearing. It should serve as an in- troduction to the subject of hot tearing. Our aim is to identify technology and scientific gaps regarding hot tearing and the opportunities that lie ahead for the cast- ing community.

It is our objective that the disparate re-

sults and various theories be better understood, and that a reliable prediction model be available. Ultimately, we intend to establish a quantitative test that evaluates hot tearing based on the critical parameters rather than qualitative indices.
