Children Of Stressed Parents More Likely To Suffer From Obesity
Stress in parents is being flagged as a potential risk factor for childhood obesity and related behaviours.
Although previous studies have shown links between parental stress and childhood obesity this report, by Dr Elizabeth Prout-Parks, a physician nutrition specialist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, in America, is the first to find a connection between parent-perceived stress and more frequent fast food consumption.
Dr Prout-Parks, and her fellow authors speculated that parents who are stressed may buy more fast food to save time, or reduce the demands of meal preparation. They also suggest that actual and perceived parental stress may result in less supervision of children, who may then make unhealthy food and activity choices.
