Welcome to springboard
The new decade presents great opportunities for Britain and for British-based businesses. As a Government we believe we must lift our eyes as a nation to the immense opportunity presented by the world’s emerging markets in the south and east. We recognise that the success of British business will be fundamental to our economic prosperity and to the livelihoods of future generations of Britons, and that it underwrites our ability to shape global affairs and promote our values.
The Coalition Government is determined to do as much as it can to help UK companies to prosper and to support British exports and inward investment into our economy. We are hard-wiring a commercial focus throughout the Foreign Office, channelling more officials into work on trade policy and urging our embassies to support British business alongside our other important foreign policy objectives.
We are strengthening the UK’s bilateral relationships with the Gulf, North Africa, Latin America, India and China. We have created a new team to lead cross-Government work on emerging markets. In July, the Prime Minister led a trade delegation to India which produced agreement on an ambitious agenda of increased trade, co-operation on civil nuclear technology and cultural exchanges. And our new National Security Council means that, for the first time, international policy and support for British business run through the veins of the entire Government.
This issue of springboard aims to inspire you to take a global view in the year ahead. It highlights the importance of rising export levels to the UK’s continued economic growth and describes how sectors such as life sciences have become crucial to the country’s longterm success. It also outlines how going on trade missions, forming a consortium or studying the principles of behavioural economics could help your business achieve its international goals. Useful advice is provided by James Dyson, Lynne Franks and Vernon Hill.
We look forward to working with you and I wish you a prosperous 2011.
Rt Hon William Hague MP
First Secretary of State, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs
