Letters
It is becoming commonplace for councils to close up to half their library branches. It would be inconsistent if the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) did not superintend councils acting as unjustifiably as Wirral, preventing the slashing of services.
We call on the DCMS not to ignore its responsibilities. We ask you to act in the spirit of the 1964 Act and prevent council cuts which amount to vandalism.
Alan Gibbons NUT member, author and organiser of the Campaign for the Book
• Editor's note: This open letter to DCMS ministers Jeremy Hunt and Ed Vaizey was signed by over 1,100 authors, illustrators, publishers, trade unionists and others, including Philip Pullman, Carol Ann Duffy, Michael Rosen, Malorie Blackman (see page 50) and the NUT's Christine Blower.
There is an alternative
I have been an NUT member since the early 1960s. I am now a retired primary head teacher but continue to work for fairness in all things.
I would like to see my union give full backing to the 'Yes to Fairer Votes' campaign. A 'yes' at the alternative vote referendum on 5 May 2011 is your chance to reform the electoral system and be better represented in the future. Find out more at
www.yestofairervotes.org.
Joan Ellis, by email
• Editor's note: This is an area on which the NUT would not normally have a policy position.
Maths lesson
Regarding the 'pupil premium', Mr Gove, £430 per year breaks down as follows:
£430 over 38 weeks is £11.31 per week.
£11.31 divided by five days per week is £2.26 per day.
£2.26 divided by four lessons a day is £0.565, rounded up to £0.57 per lesson.
So, Mr Gove, the individual pupil premium for our most disadvantaged young people is 57p per lesson!
Remind me again how much was required to bail out the banks?
