For Teachers
The best laid plans
This invaluable book shows how far we have come since just a spidergram was considered necessary for curriculum planning. The reader is led through preparation, planning and assessment, but the book is also full of anecdotes, reflective questions and exercises, making it an enjoyable read.
Everything a teacher needs to plan is covered, and assessment is shown as a tool to enable more professional and worthwhile lessons. A must for all teachers at any stage of their careers.

ICTeach
At last - an honest picture of ICT in primary schools, with findings developed from a vast amount of practical, pupil-centred research. Technologies, social media and access to information are constantly changing. This book identifies how crucial it is to understand and harness how children approach these technologies and apply them inside and outside the classroom in a way that engages and motivates them. A lot from this book can also be applied in the secondary sector.

The gift of dyslexia
This fascinating and practical book is divided into four broad and helpful sections: what dyslexia really is; a developmental theory of dyslexia; the gift; and doing something about it - a guide for parents, tutors and educators. Attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity are also considered. Of particular interest is the chapter on 'Dyslexia in Action', which looks at 'trigger words' that can cause disorientation and symptoms of dyslexia.
A useful book for the student teacher and experienced practitioner alike.

For pupils
Music maker
A brilliant introduction to music for early years and Key Stage 1. There are comprehensive instructions for making simple instruments from found objects, notation for the simple tunes (some new and some traditional), words for all new songs, and a CD to help performance. Each track is given as a complete performance or as backing. Non-music specialists would find it easy to use and it's great fun. Highly recommended.

Snakes alive!
Once again myths and legends are raided for inspiration, this time by Christopher Fowler. He's created an urban fantasy novel that's a cross between a great episode of Doctor Who and Percy Jackson. The characters are dealing with the fantastic but their reactions are realistic and it feels like it's happening in the real world. Thrilling, scary and very readable.

The Curse Of Snakes: Hellion by Christopher Fowler. Andersen Press Ltd. 197pp p/b. £5.99. ISBN 1849390568.
The three bears
Parents don't believe their little boy when he insists he must delay his bedtime because a trio of demanding bears are lying in wait for him on the stairs. Very funny tale brilliantly illustrated to catch the eye of all little folk and disbelieving adults.
