NQT induction survey - What you said

For most newly qualified teachers induction is a positive experience which lays the foundation for their career. But for NQTs who don't get the right support, it can be difficult.

The NUT is surveying all newly qualified members about their experiences. Initial findings suggest that, while most are happy with the support they've had from their school, some are clearly not getting all they're entitled to under statutory guidance. For example:

• one in ten do not receive their 10 per cent non-teaching time for induction

• one in 11 do not receive their 10 per cent planning, preparation and assessment (PPA) time

• 13 per cent have not received any written records of their assessment

• 41 per cent have not been given a contact at the local authority with whom they can raise concerns

• 40 per cent have not been involved in planning their induction programme.

A number also reported that they have yet to be allocated a mentor, or that the mentor is not given enough time to meet them regularly.

Typical comments included:

"I am finding it extremely difficult to do everything expected of me, despite working extremely long hours."

"I still have not had an induction pack from my LA."

"Never have I felt quite so out of my depth, and with little or no resources to help set up as a new teacher. Granted this is not the same for everyone, but it... is making me think, if this is the future, do I want to be part of it?"

It is essential that everything is in place to give NQTs the best chance of completing induction successfully, as if they fail they cannot teach in a state school.

If you are an NQT member and are not getting any of the statutory entitlements, speak to your NUT school rep. Information and guidance is available on the NUT website at www.teachers.org.uk/nqt. Advice is also available from your NUT division or association - see www.teachers.org.uk/contactus.

Further findings from NQT member surveys will be reported in future editions of The Teacher. If you have not yet responded to the survey questionnaire, you have until 31 January 2011 to do so. Find it at www.surveymonkey.com/s/SQMW5YM.

Global ambassadors

The winners of this year's Steve Sinnott Award are Navdeep Bual, 15, and Yasir Yeahia, 14, from Seven Kings School in Ilford, Essex. They will be the 2011 Young Global Education Ambassadors. The annual award is made in memory of late NUT General Secretary Steve Sinnott, in honour of his commitment to universal education.

The four shortlisted schools were judged in London on 1 December by Janet Convery (Global Campaign for Education), Christine Blower (NUT General Secretary), Rachel Williams (education writer, The Guardian), and Andy Stockbridge (Toybox).

The winners will visit Bolivia with Toybox and the Global Campaign for Education in February to see the obstacles street-working and street-living children face in getting education. Look out for their report in The Teacher.

Global campaign for education

The NUT is delighted to be supporting the Global Campaign for Education's 'Send my Friend to School' campaign once again. This year's theme is 'Send my sister to school'.

Every extra year a girl spends in school helps her earn more, keeps her safer from HIV/Aids infection, and reduces the risk her child will die in infancy. Yet most of the 69 million children in the world not in school are girls.
