PADDLER: KAYARNE RANDAN RAUMA RIVER, NORWAY

“Covered head to toe in mosquito bites and spider webs; muddy, soaked and bleeding from my shins; I spare nothing to get a shot. I’m often getting absolutely trashed and broken racing to get ahead of the group to set up—but some shots are worth every ounce of effort.”

“Water-level shots are unsurpassed for giving a sense of the action, but high-quality waterproof cameras cost a fortune. A simple solution is to make a watertight box out of Plexiglass. Just drop your camera in it and fire away using an infrared shutter trigger.
Use a fairly wide-angle lens set on manual focus at approximately one metre and set your exposure mode on aperture priority at f-8 or f-11. This setting will keep most things in focus up to about 10 metres.”
