FLASHBACK the >> COMBO MOVE FOR THE MASSES

COMBINATION MOVES put two different moves together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Abstract mathematics aside, combination moves are fun and impressive, but the problem is most need a huge wave in order to generate the necessary momentum to complete the move. The flashback is a combo move that can be done on medium-sized waves. Broken down into its component parts, it’s a 180-degree spin into a clean backstab (clean backwards blunt). The beauty of the flashback is that it actually makes it

easier to do the backstab. By spinning into the backstab you generate extra hull speed which tricks your boat into thinking you are on a faster wave than you actually are. The spin helps your hull reach planing speed and im- proves its release off the water. The momentum you’ve created with the spin will also help the vertical rotation of your backstab.

1. Establish a front surf high on the wave. 2. Once you’re sliding down the wave, put in a strong

back sweep on your left (for a right flashback) to start your spin.

3. Keep your hull flat so it can pick up speed. 4. Lift your left edge and drive your right edge into the

water. Start to wind your torso so that it is ahead of the boat.

5. This is the crux. Bring your body as far ahead of your

boat as possible. This gives your torso maximum torque and enables your boat to explode up and out of the water. Keep lifting your left knee hard and keep driving your right edge down. The harder you drive your right edge into the water the more pop you’ll get off the wave.

6. You’ve already done all the hard work at this stage. left to keep you on the wave.

Just keep your torso moving ahead of the boat and your boat will follow.

7. When you land, put in a hard forward stroke on your

Remember to take your time and get set up at the top of the wave so you can generate speed on the way down. Throwing a trick when the wave is working with you will make things much easier. Time your spin to coincide with your acceleration down the wave. Follow these seven steps on any medium-sized wave and you’ll be throwing flashbacks in no time.
