E-LEARNING
Creating e-learning A
s training budgets get smaller and centrally funded e-learning
projects are being cut, NHS trusts will need to do more e- learning themselves. Yet most trusts simply don’t have the resources or expertise to become e-learning developers.
So if you’ve been delegated the task of creating some e-learning, what can you do to keep costs down?
1. Look within your own trust first
Many trusts have multiple training departments (for IM&T, HR, clinical, etc) that may already have tools and resources to create e-learning.
2. “Off-the-shelf”
If it’s a generic kind of subject, chances are there are already courses written that do most of what you want. Most commercial publishers can now make their courses available in an editable format or will customise it for you.
3. Find out what other trusts have done already
There are hundreds of courses being developed at trust level, in subjects such as:
- junior doctors induction - prescriptions for junior doctors
- direct cataract accreditation scheme
- clinical audit training - lean awareness - people and public involvement
- PAS training, ESR and employee online
If developed to be editable and not overly specific to your own trust, it is possible to license your course to other organisations and recoup some or all of your development costs. It works much better this way round than trying to get a group of trusts together and develop a course as a joint project.
4. Read the fine print!
Contracting out development can produce great results, even on a limited budget, but beware of ownership and what charges there could be in the future.

If your trust is providing the subject matter expertise, make sure you “own” the course - and get the “source” files. This will enable you to make your own changes or contract out revisions to someone else should the original provider go out of business or prove too expensive.
