See historic York from above! With sweeping panoramic views of York and the surrounding countryside, it is clear to see how Clifford’s Tower has played such a crucial role in York’s history. Once the central stronghold of York Castle, the tower has survived turbulent centuries of fire, siege and attempted demolition. Explore the part Clifford’s Tower played in the history of England, with its violent origins in William the Conqueror’s northern campaign of Terror.

National Railway Museum Open Daily: 10am – 6pm. Closed 24 – 26 December.

NEW FOR 2010! Take hold of the past and explore the excavations which first unearthed the Viking-age city of Jorvik in our brand new exhibitions. Built on the very site where archaeologists discovered over 40,000 Viking-age artefacts, this is now your chance to get up-close to 1,000-year-old houses as they are revealed beneath your feet, objects taken from the excavations explored, and Viking-age timbers brought before your eyes. On-board your time capsule in the reconstructed city of Jorvik, you will witness working craftsmen, the smells of the cooking and cesspit, the layout of the houses and Old Norse spoken by the Vikings. New audio and video displays help you to investigate all of the information gathered from the 5-year-long dig at Coppergate and piece together the jigsaw of where the Vikings came from, why they came here, how they lived and died, and where they travelled to.
