Winning the DAME at the start of the global recession gave a wonderful brand recognition boost to the Hybrid System. Two years on I can confirm that Steyr Motors is in line with the ambitious targets set back then. We have seen ongoing developments of the base product, the introduction of a general hybrid propulsion solution including new battery technology and an intelligent DC/AC power management, combinations with solar technology, and enhanced transmission and propeller efficiency.


Despite the relatively conservative nature of the marine industry, we expect a market share of 20% within the next 10 years for hybrid systems. The companies that will benefit from this shift after the recession has ended will be those who are able to set and realize technologies with superior and unique features. At Steyr Motors we will combine this with consistent attention to the environment and a diligent use of resources that takes the future fully into account.


Thanks to its consistent annual exposure, the professional and worldwide accepted jury, and the comprehensive scale of the event, the DAME Award remains very important for the entire industry. From my point of view I believe it is vital to honour those companies who deserve recognition for the performance of their products, their ambition to manufacture sustainable products and the significant impact these innovations have on the market.

JURY STATEMENT 2008 This hybrid propulsion system allows a yacht to operate in any of four modes. The engine itself can be used to start the engine, eliminating the need for a starter motor. The engine can also be used as a generator to charge the vessel’s batteries. It can be used as well to leave a harbour in the cruise mode under electric power at speeds up to 5 knots. And finally, the engine can be used in the “boost” mode in situations where additional power is required to get the boat onto a plane. The best part of this product is that the additional generator/motor adds only 100 mm (4.2 inches) to the overall length of the engine and an additional 75 kg (165.4 pounds) of weight, yet it produces an output of 7kW at 48 volts. The electric control unit uses CAN bus protocol to monitor and regulate the engine in each mode, thus allowing it to be linked to other “smart” engine controls.
