A hat-trick of winners One company has scooped the DAME Award on no less than three occasions over the past twenty years. The names were different on each occasion - Nautech Ltd in 1992, Raytheon Electronics in 1996 and Raytheon Marine Electronics in 2000 - the company behind these innovative award-winning products is known today as Raymarine. Congratulations to all those responsible over the years for introducing such groundbreaking solutions!
Revolutionising the market The RL80C and RL80CRC were the first leisure radar/chartplotters to offer interchangeable antenna formats. This allowed users to choose an open array or random configuration to suit their vessel rather than having to make do with the one that ‘came with the display’. The RLs were also the first sunlight–viewable displays that could be mounted in the cockpit of a boat.
The launch of the RL80C and RL80CRC marked another milestone - the first occasion that the delights of MARPA and radar overlay became generally available to leisure sailors. The radar overlay function opened up the possibility of using radar to people who would never have considered it otherwise; compared with what had gone before these radar-chartplotters were incredibly user-friendly.
The RL displays offered the leisure marine market unparalleled plug- and-play capability at affordable prices with easy upgrade paths for customers wanting to expand their systems over time. Whilst the overlay capability set a new industry standard on small screens, the implementation of radar overlay itself offered completely new opportunities for radar use; leading to markets that had never been anticipated and increasing sales dramatically.
Frankly, the RL80C and RL80CRC were both a great success, revolutionising the market as a whole and forcing Raymarine’s competitors to up their game. A decade on, multi-function displays are considered the norm but it was the RL displays that opened the door.

JURY STATEMENT 2000 This outstanding feature is a daylight viewing LCD screen that brings a mass-market viable outdoor colour display to boating; it is noticeable that it outshines displays in much bigger consumer sectors such as laptop computers. But the jury also appreciated the homogeneous design approach, styling and user-friendly operation of these radar plotters. It was particularly noted that form and function related to many other units in Raytheon’s range, meaning that operators familiar with one model could quickly find their way around others and differing sizes and abilities. A sign of a tremendous company, dedicated to perfection.
