Climate Tropical with high temperatures and humidity. The three main seasons are hot from March to May when temperatures can reach the high 30ºC; rainy from June and October when temperatures average in the low 30ºC; and ‘cool’ from November /December when there can be rain, high seas and wind. The north is always several degrees cooler.
Currency The Thai unit of currency is the baht. £1 = 47.57 Baht (October 2010, Bank of Thailand).
Geography Thailand is similar in size to France with a land area of 513,115 sq. km. (200,000 sq. mls.) and is bordered by Malaysia to the south, Burma to the west and north, Lao PDR to the north and east and Cambodia to the southeast.
Health No inoculations or vaccinations are required but visitors should check with their GP and may need typhoid and hepatitis B vaccinations, and protection against malaria if travelling in remote areas of the country.
Safety Thailand is a very safe destination as long as normal precautions are taken. The tourist police can be called from any phone in Thailand on 1155.
Time Thailand is seven hours ahead of GMT, six hours in UK summertime.
Visas UK and Irish visitors can stay in Thailand for up to 30 days without a visa provided that their passport has a minimum of six months before expiry. A Tourist Visa is available for up to 60
days. Visa extensions can be made at the Immigration Office in Bangkok.
