FIRSTQUARTER The Redskins’ offense opened the game with the
ball—and appeared to regress on its first three possessions.Washington’s first play: Quarterback DonovanMcNabb slipping and falling for a nine- yard loss. The first possession netted three plays and zero yards. The next possession lasted five plays but lost three yards. The third possession: Seven positive yards, but a punt. The defense, though, helped keep the Redskins
in the game. It forced the Lions into a three-and- out on their first possession, and after a poor punt fromHunter Smith gave the Lions the ball at the Redskins 47, DeAngeloHall took points off the board. The Lions moved the ball to theWashington 22. On first down, quarterbackMatthewStafford looked for wide receiver Calvin Johnson in the left corner of the end zone.Hall leaped to make the interception—his sixth of the season and fifth in two weeks. The Redskins’ other high-priced defender
surfaced on the next possession. After Detroit again moved intoWashington territory, the Lions had third and one from the Redskins 47. Albert Haynesworth broke through the line, though, and dropped Kevin Smith for a two-yard loss.

On third and one from the 7, safety LaRon Landry stopped Jahvid Best for no gain, holding Detroit to a field goal attempt. But as JasonHanson lined up for a 25-yarder,
Phillip Daniels jumped offside and the Lions had a first down at the Redskins 3. After a one-yard gain, Stafford found Brandon Pettigrewjust over the goal line for a two-yard touchdown pass that put the Lions up, 14-13. Banks broke through for a 95-yard return of the
ensuing kickoff for an apparent touchdown. But Reed Doughty was called for an illegal block in the back, and the Redskins began the possession at their 8. Washington cornerback Phillip Buchanon later
