Pushing the boundaries Sureline perimeter heating from Smith’s Environmental Products is designed to replace the skirting of perimeter walls and provide a consistent flow of warm air around a room. Discreet, versatile and simple to install, Sureline is available in any colour and comes with a full range of attachments.

Perimeter heating is a natural convector that requires connection to the wet central heating system. Hot water from the central heating system passes through the heat exchanger transferring its heat to the aluminium fins. The natural movement of air gently circulates over the heat exchanger, is warmed and evenly distributed around the room.

Sureline has heat outputs as high as 750W per metre and the product also comes complete with a range of attachments for corners and the connection of a Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV). The product can also be controlled via a remote wall mounted room thermostat and a single port motorised valve. The seams formed by the joining covers are also smooth and uninterrupted, providing seamless joins between any abutting covers and/or ends. www.smiths-env.com

New from Crowcon

Crowcon Detection Instruments has launched its new LaserMethane mini Gen2 (LMm) portable methane detector. Designed specifically to detect methane at distance of up to 20 metres in seconds, the ATEX approved, second generation LMm is changing the way methane leaks are detected. What used to be a time consuming and potentially hazardous procedure is now quick and easy. The LMm is very easy to operate. By pointing the device’s laser beam towards a suspected leak or survey line, such as a gas pipe or ceiling, the concentration of methane is measured by detecting the difference between the light emitted and the light received. The device uses an innovative laser diode tuned specifically to the characteristics of methane, and the level is displayed on the ppm.m readout. On start-up the instrument performs a self check and verifies the operation and calibration of the laser diode by referencing an inbuilt methane cell. This ensures consistent high performance, accuracy and reliability. ATEX approval allows the LMm to be used in Zone 1 hazardous areas for on-plant use, in M2 mining applications, as well as detecting escapes in hard to reach or inaccessible areas. www.crowcon.com

Thinking Buildings Universe Knowing where we can go to access particular information is something that can save us incalculable amounts of valuable time. The new Thinking Buildings Universe from Grundfos now offers building services professionals a centralised information point that is a one stop shop for commercial buildings services pump applications.

This site has been specifically designed to work as an aide during

planning and specification phases as well as when the selections have been made and the systems are operational. It has been developed with potential users around Europe who gave their input as to what they expected, needed and wanted to see from such an information hub.

One particularly useful tool is the Lexicon function that provides you with a glossary of pump industry terms. When you enter the website you will see the Lexicon option along the top bar which allows you to search for terms either by putting in a key word or by selecting from the A to Z option.

With this facility and so much more why not save this site as a ‘favourite’ so that your personal information centre will be available whenever you need it. www.grundfos.com/commercialbuilding

Don’t replace, e-place with

Grundfos Taking the opportunity to review the situation when there is a requirement to replace a pump is rarely taken, instead the pump is replaced with a ‘like for like’ pump which means the opportunity to gain efficiency, save energy and improve comfort levels is lost.

When replacing a pump there are several points that should be

considered as these will have an impact on whether you are making the best selection including:

• Is the pump correctly sized for the current duty requirements? • Has the building undergone any change of use since the pump was fitted?

• What solution would mean least pipe work modification? • How important is service access?

But the most important question of all should be is there an opportunity to replace with a variable speed option that will only work as hard as it needs to? This can save up to 80%+ of the energy required over a fixed speed counterpart. Grundfos Pumps has been the frontrunners in developing variable speed technology and can provide you with a wide range of reliable pump solutions plus a wealth of experience. www.grundfos.co.uk

Rehau launches bench trunking Rehau Cable Management has launched an innovative new Bench Trunking system to complement its perimeter trunking ranges. Designed for the safe and discreet distribution of data cabling in teaching and working spaces, it is a flexible solution based around an asymmetric triangular shaped UPVC base profile and single lid. The base can be configured either high to maximise the useful worktop area or low to fit where vertical space is limited, for

example beneath a window; and the system can even be used back to back across the middle of worktops or as columns, pods or pillars.

Boris Romero, Rehau’s New Product Development Manager, said: “In classrooms and workshops, a cable trunking system running on top of working surfaces is often the most practical solution for cabling installations. Our Bench Trunking system is flexible enough to meet the requirements of virtually any application and is compatible with all of our other cable management systems.” Rehau’s robust Bench Trunking range is designed for use in tough, demanding applications such as laboratories and workshops in environments such as education, health and manufacturing. www.rehau.co.uk

ABB launches iPhone App ABB has launched a free energy calculator application (App) for the Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod. The App allows, primarily, end-users to calculate the energy savings they can achieve by installing variable speed drives to control motors.

The App gives end-users the ability to make quick comparisons between motors controlled by variable speed drives and motors running direct-on-line without any speed control device. Users simply select their industry and the operating duty profile; the voltage, phase and motor power rating; running hours; and electricity cost. The app then estimates how much CO2, energy and costs can be saved by installing an ABB drive to control the application.

“Our new App makes it

simple for customers to calculate the potential savings they can achieve by installing variable speed drives,” says Steve Ruddell, ABB’s UK energy spokesperson. “By installing a variable speed drive it is possible to reduce your energy spend by up to 70% on a single application. The tool is free to download and makes selecting drives according to the needs of the application extremely accessible.” www.abb.co.uk/energy

Danlers heater boost switch Danlers’ heater boost switch, for the control of electric heating loads, automatically turns the load off after a selected time period has elapsed. There are four different time settings to choose from (15 minutes, 30 minutes, one hour and two hours). Pressing the

button selects each time lag choice in turn.

The switch is manufactured in the UK and is designed for use with immersion heaters, heated towel rails and other suitable electric heating loads.

Energy saving card switch Crabtree has developed a new range of energy saving, card- operated switches in response to a number of new required features as defined by its end user customers. The switches complement the company’s popular range of Capital Moulded, Capital Metal Plate and its prestige Platinum Low Profile accessories.

As with other card switches, the device controls energy consumption in hotels and apartments by ensuring that electrical devices are not left on when rooms are unoccupied. It goes further than many other competitor switches however by providing a natural angled entry for the card and illuminating the slot itself, for much easier location and operation, especially at night in a darkened hotel room or corridor. Insertion of the key card turns the neon locator off in line with its energy saving credentials. Crabtree’s card switch is operated by a door entry key card up to 86mm x 54mm x 1mm, and controls the power supply to a room via a suitably rated contactor. The switch requires a mounting box of 25mm minimum depth. www.electrium.co.uk
