Publishers Note
For 21 years Dictum has organised the Boss of the Year®
Award to celebrate leadership in the South African workplace.
For 21 years CareerSuccess magazine has covered this Award!
this Award. O
We take this opportunity to thank many people and organisations for their support over the years.
First and foremost to the late Emmie Gous, a journalist turned publicist who came to see us 21 years ago to discuss the creation of something back into the marketplace which had been so supportive of her business.
We researched and together came up with the establishment of National Bosses Day in South Africa, and the following year, the Award was created to find South Africa’s best bosses.
It became immediately obvious that the project required a financial support beyond the original client’s possibilities and, it was decided to look for a patron and sponsors. PX became the first patron, which when taken over by Transnet, saw Transnet become the patron for many years. At Transnet, first Riah Phiyega then Eunice Maluleke who gave this Award their all to support the growth of the Award and spread the message of sound leadership practices in South Africa.

Today, Eunice Maluleke heads the MTN Foundation which is the current patron of the award – and again we acknowledge her passion for the work this Award does, as she embraces the leadership cause.
A very special acknowledgement to Hans Servas, responsible for the brand of Stabilo Boss, who from the outset wanted to be involved with this Award. He has followed the project for 21 years and supported its principles wholeheartedly, ensuring his team was involved and participated in the events around the Award.
To Steve Harvey of TCH (originally with IdeaData) who has headed the team producing the Audio Visuals for 21 years at Boss of the Year®
events, we place on
record our deep appreciation for the tireless enthusiasm and the bond he has created with this project. It has been a pleasure working with him and his team.
Our heartfelt thanks goes to Stephany Stone of Die Kunshuis Klanwilliam for two decades as prizegiver to the titlebearer and his/her nominator.
Equally to all the organisations who, over the years, have supported the Award and National Bosses Day by sponsoring prizes and supporting the event.
To the many nominators who have brought to the Award’s attention many unsung heroes and heroines, our sincere thanks for having done so, as they have created an identified community of good workplace leaders in South Africa.
To the bosses themselves, those many who have made it to the semi-finals, finals and title, you have made it all worthwhile! Meeting you is a priviledge, and South Africa is all the better for people like you who believe in this nation and are committed to its success.
To the endorsers, the selection panels, and the judges we record our deep appreciation for your work, dedication and loyalty to this Award. A special acknowledgement to Theo Garrun of The Star Workplace, who has given of his time, and expertise, for as long as we can remember!
Last but not least, the Dictum team who give this Award everything and more to ensure it continues to be a hallmark event in South Africa. And also the unofficial Dictum team, people who are with other organisations but volunteer on the day of the banquet – where logistics are demanding – to support the Dictum team: Rene Potgieter, Dawn Williams, Kelly Williams, Bongani Sangweni , Manny Morais and Bev Vouzounerakis.
