Internationally... • UN panel, composed of several of the world’s top scientists on climate change, finds that Earth’s climate and ecosystems are already being affected by the accumulation of greenhouse gases.


• Romania and Bulgaria join the European Union.


• President Vladimir Putin announces Russia will suspend the 1990 Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty, which limits conventional weapons in Europe.


• In the second round of French presidential elections, Conservative candidate Nicolas Sarkozy defeats Socialist candidate Ségolène Royal, 53.1% to 46.9%.

Internationally... • Cuban President Fidel Castro, steps down after 49 years in power.


• Some 400 Buddhist monks participate in a protest march in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, to commemorate 1959’s failed uprising against China’s invasion and occupation of Tibet.


• Morgan Tsvangirai, of Zimbabwe’s Movement for Democracy and Change, withdraws from the election race, saying he could not subject his supporters to violence and intimidation.


• Democratic senator Barack Obama wins the presidential election against Sen. John McCain.


• Gordon Brown replaces Tony Blair as the prime minister of Great Britain.


• In a landmark deal, North Korea agrees to disclose details about its nuclear facilities, and dismantle all of its nuclear facilities by the end of 2007.


In South Africa...


• Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille is elected as new leader of the main


opposition Democratic Alliance (DA).


• Hundreds of thousands of public-sector workers take part in the biggest strike since the end of apartheid, causing widespread disruption to schools, hospitals and public transport.


• The ANC chooses Jacob Zuma as its leader, ousting South African president Thabo Mbeki.


• South Africa defeats England to win the 2007 Rugby World Cup.


• Lucky Dube, reggae singer, aged 43, was shot dead.


• Soweto Gospel Choir win a Grammy award.


• At their annual meeting, members of the Group of 8, the U.S., Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Canada, and Russia, set goals to cut in half by 2050 the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the environment.
