• A pipe bomb explodes at Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront’s Planet Hollywood restaurant seriously injuring 26 people which two later died in hospital.


• During the Goodwill Games held in New York in July 1998, Penny Heyns stormed into new world records by becoming the first World Record holder in the 50m Breaststroke in a time of 30.95. Roland Schoeman won the Gold Medal in the 50m Freestyle in a time of 22.04 seconds, the 4th fastest time ever recorded.


• Fifty-over cricket was part of the Commonwealth Games in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, where South Africa won the gold medal.
