Volunteer to Make a Difference

Recently I began to work on WGANC year-end events and I realized what a lucky person I am to have had the privilege of leading a board of directors that is filled with so many wonder- ful individuals. They truly care about the game of golf; they show it through their service to the WGANC.

This led to my thinking about volunteers and how vital they are to organizations. The WGANC is looking for directors to fill positions on our board because two of us are leaving since our terms are up. How do you relate what a positive experience serving on this board (or any board) is so that you can get a member to say, “Sign me up, I want to help!” If I thought relating the

experiences of seeing great golf 72 / NCGA.ORG / FALL 2010

would help, I would talk about being at the California Women’s Championship or watching the north team from both the Pacific Women’s Golf Association and WGANC compete against the PGA women teaching pros and winning for the 13th time (out of 15 matches). Or I would share the experience of attending the U.S. Junior Girls’ Amateur Qualifier and seeing young girls playing golf at a level that would make your jaw drop. Maybe telling potential

board members about the mem- bers who come and thank you for the time you give with genuine appreciation would bring mem- bers clamoring to volunteer for the board of directors that serves them so well. Do you think it could be the

opportunity to watch a player like Lynne Cowan, who is an anchor on our north team and is one of the most gracious ladies I’ve worked with? Or having Taylor Camany, who was twice named the “Most Improved Ju- nior Golfer” of our organization, come and thank you for giving her the boost she needed when she was thinking about quitting? Could it be the experience

you will gain while putting on tournaments and open days at clubs in Northern California, that sparks your interest? Maybe it will be the lifelong friends and memories you will make that will prompt you to become a member of this board. I recommend volunteer- ing for an organization you feel passionate about. Giving back

to something you believe in can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life; in fact if I were to sum up my four years as a director I would rank it right up there with motherhood. My wish is that you have an experience with a group that is as good as the one I have had with the WGANC— this board is fantastic and I am told what a great year it has been by members everywhere I go. We would welcome you with

encouragement, new experiences and friendship. What you gain is so much more than the time you are asked to give.
