istry, it only seemed natural for the four of us to put together our own act,” Burke said. Since they were already


performing as an improv troupe, for fun the Bennett brothers and Sprague put together two music videos with themselves in white- face. They sang the songs Bennett had written: “Love World of Love” and “Scary World.” They took their act to Balboa Park and the crowds came to watch.


David Bennett explained that


their style of performance is musical pantomime. “It is heavily influenced by Comedia del Arte, Vaudeville, and timeless entertain- ers such as Charlie Chaplin and Red Skelton,” he said. While the group does perform a few covers during their act, the majority of their songs are original. The performers have created their own CDs, which are available for purchase on their website. request the group has had was for a wedding. “We never imagined that any- one would want us as part of their wedding,” Sprague said. “We had a lot of fun with it, and weddings have now actually become one of our most requested events.”


The Steam Powered Giraffes blended in marvelously at the Comic-Con convention. However, Bennett said it hasn’t been an easy road for artists in today’s economy.


“Even so, we have been greeted with nothing but positive reactions since day one,” he said, adding that he is optimistic about future endeavors. The group was named San Diego’s second best live comedy act in a Best-of 10News A-List contest. The performers are clearly on their way up, moving away from any stereotype of mime art.
