Impacting the bottom line with tax credits

MARKET
By Joe Whitaker Are you taking advantage of the tax credit programs available to you? Many
small businesses (and some large businesses) have realized that managing and reaping the benefits of tax credits can make the difference in these tough economic times. Not all of these programs are new. Some of them are established and have been used since 2006. For example, enterprise zones were created in California to stimulate busi- ness investments and to increase job opportunities in areas of high unemployment. An enterprise zone is a geographically designated area in which businesses can receive substantial state tax breaks and other benefits. The San Diego Regional Enterprise Zone was established in 2006. The “One
Zone” is a regional economic development program incorporating portions of San Diego, Chula Vista and National City. An investment of $1.7 billion has been made in the San Diego-area enterprise
zones. More than 20,000 jobs have been generated and thousands of qualified businesses have received technical or financial assistance from it.
Included under this program are: Sales or use tax credit: A tax credit against the purchase of new manufacturing,
assembly, data processing or communications equipment equivalent to the amount of sales or use tax, or up to $1.55 million annually.
Hiring credit: A tax credit on the wages to qualified new employees over a five-year period
(up to 50 percent in the first year, 40 percent in the second year, etc.). This credit could exceed $37,000 per employee and is retroactive to late 2006.
Accelerated depreciation deduction: This is an option to accelerate depreciation on business property. A business
may treat 40 percent of the cost of qualified property as a business expense in the first year it is placed into service, or a maximum deduction of $20,000 per year, whichever is smaller. Net interest deduction for lenders: This component allows lenders a deduction on the net interest earned from
loans made to enterprise zone businesses, including business loans, mortgages and loans from noncommercial sources.
Other advantages include: • No-cost job referral service used to find qualified employees whose wages can be claimed as tax credits
• Development permit expediting and assistance • Tax savings for enterprise zone employees • Access to specialized technical and financial assistance programs. • You may be eligible for one or more of these programs. Call me for assistance.

Reader Advisory: the National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the following classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer “employment” but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it’s illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in US dollars. 800 numbers may or may not reach Canada.
that North Park is an eclectic community with a wide range of shoppers: people in suits shop- ping between work and home, parents with children in tow, low-income shoppers, teens and the elderly and local chefs and foodies. “It’s a wonderful mix and everyone comes together over their common interest in good food,” she said.
White said all farmers at Adams Avenue
and North Park are Certified Producers, meaning the SD County Agricultural Depart- ment has verified that they are growing the produce they offer for sale. At each of those markets, some vendors are also Certified Or- ganic, a certification obtained by meeting spe- cific state and federal guidelines. White said both North Park and Adams Av-
enue markets offer farm fresh fruits and vege- tables and also locally raised meat, cheese and eggs, along with a full range of bread, seafood, coffee beans, locally made pastas and pestos and more. “Other than paper products, it’s one-stop shopping,” she said. Both markets have live music each week,
adding to the ambience and energy of the markets as weekly community-gathering places. “We schedule a variety of local musi- cians in all kinds of genres,” said White. As fall progresses, look for more root veg-
etables–beets, potatoes, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli, said White, adding that a wide variety of apples are also coming into season along with winter squash, pumpkins and beans. “Heirloom tomatoes had a late season

this year, so we’re still seeing a beautiful vari- ety of those,” she added. Why shop at an Uptown farmers market
like Adams Avenue or North Park? “More and more people are realizing that
the investment in quality food pays back many times over in reduced medical bills,” said White, noting there have been farmers markets in all cultures for centuries. “In the U.S., they have sometimes suffered from over-regulation, but the expanded knowledge and the growth of markets in recent years has raised the bar,” she said, concluding, “There are too many people who have tasted fresh food and can never go back to commodity-level food for farmers mar- kets to do anything but continue to thrive.”
