RAVENS31, BRONCOS17

Denver should have seen it com-

ing: another beatdown in Baltimore by the bruising, no-nonsense Ravens. RayRice ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns, andBaltimore frustrated Broncos QB Kyle Orton all afternoon. The Ravens jumped to a 17-0 lead

and coasted to their third straight win, the first this season by double digits. Baltimore moved past idle Pittsburgh into sole possession of first place in the AFC North. “It was an important win for us to

get where we’re going as a football team,” Coach John Harbaugh said. “This is a game we really had to win at home, against an AFC team.” The Broncos fell to 0-5 against the

Ravens in Baltimore. In those games, Denver has been outscored 142-56, including 60-24 over the last two years. In this one, Rice led a running

attack that gained233yards, andRay Lewis spearheaded a defense that relentlessly pursued Orton and limit- ed Denver to 39 yards on the ground. Orton completed his fourth

straight 300-yardpassinggamewitha 44-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Lloyd with 35 seconds left. It was of little consolation to the Broncos, who hurt themselves by losing a fumble and committing 10 penalties for 90 yards. “They’re just so good,” Orton said.

“It’s tough to playthemanywhere. Just be honest, they beat us up today.” What was billed as a duel between

the best aerialgamein the league and the No. 1 pass defense turned into a mismatch. Orton went 23 for 38 for 314 yards

and two touchdowns to Lloyd. But Denver never got closer than 10 points after the Ravens went up by 17 with 9:21 left in the second quarter. “I’m disappointed. We didn’t play

as tough as certainly you’re going to need to against a team like this,” Broncos Coach Josh McDaniels said.

Giants add dash of offense to relentless D

Nicks helps build early lead, while Houston is unable to muster much

BY CHRIS DUNCAN

houston — The New York Gi- ants found some offense to go with that powerful defensive front. Eli Manning threw two of his

three touchdown passes to Hakeem Nicks and the Giants held Houston to a franchise-low 24 yards rushing in a 34-10 win over the Texans on Sunday. Nicks finished with career

highs of 12 catches and 130 yards, another big day for a receiver against the Texans’ porous sec- ondary.Manningwent27 of42for 297 yards passing, and threw his third touchdown pass to Steve Smith in the fourth quarter. But Nicks was Manning’s true

go-to receiver early on Sunday, catching seven passes for 97 yards in the first half. “Youneverknowwho’sgoing to

have the hot day,” Manning said. “I don’t have favorites and I don’t pick guys out. I’m reading cover- ages and throwing to the open guy. So they know that.” Osi Umenyiora sacked Texans

quarterback Matt Schaub twice and also forced two fumbles, while the Giants (3-2) held NFL rushing leader Arian Foster to 25 yards on 11 carries. Linebacker Brian Cushing

made four solo tackles in his season debut for Houston (3-2). He was suspended the first four games for violating the NFL’s pol- icy on banned substances. His much-anticipated return

was quickly forgotten as the Gi- ants rolled to a 21-0 lead in the first 17 minutes. The Texans had no choice but to start throwing, and that played right into the hands of the Giants’ pass rush, which generated 10 sacks against Chicago last week. “Our offense did a good job of

getting off to that early lead and scoring points so they couldn’t run the ball,” Umenyiora said. “We just played off of each other.” Manning faced little pressure

in the first half and completed 15 of 22 passes for 175 yards, while Nicks dominated Houston cor- nerbacks Kareem Jackson and Brice McCain. The Texans were giving up 338 yards passing per game and their young corner- backs had taken most of the blame. Manning noticed this week

while studying the Texans that their safeties often creep forward

on play-action fakes, leaving gaps down the field. He told his receiv- ers to watch for that, and Nicks was apparently paying attention. “It’s fun when those things

work,” Manning said. “It’s not really always what the coach had drawn up and what the coach wants, but you kind of do some things on your own.” The Giants’ defense took care

of the rest, holdingHouston’s top- ranked rushing offense to eight yards.TheTexanscamein averag- ing 172 yards rushing per game. The Texans ran four plays for negative yards andmustered only

LIONS44,RAMS6 The Lions moved a step closer to-

ward putting their miserable past be- hind them, winning for the first time this seasonandby their largestmargin in 15years. Stefan Logan’s 105-yard kickoff re-

turn broke a tie in the second quarter, and Detroit rolled to the win over visit- ing St. Louis. “It feels good to get this one so we

canmove on,”CDominicRaiola said. Detroit (1-4) hadn’t won since Nov.

22, when Matthew Stafford threw five touchdown passes againstCleveland. The Lions, who had the NFL’s first

0-16 season two years ago, had won just three of their previous 44 games. They had a shot to win three of their first four games — losing by five, three and two points — after their 14 losses last season were by at least a touch- down and severalwere lopsided. “Our players understood howclose

we were,” second-year coach Jim Schwartz said. “But you need valida- tion.” The Lions won by more than a

touchdown for the first time sinceNov. 4,2007,when they beatDenver,44-7. The Rams (2-3) lost standout WR

MarkClaytonwithaninjuredrightknee in the first quarter and that limited rookie Sam Bradford’s passing op- tions. Clayton, whose injury appears seri-

ous, fell to the ground while running a pattern and stayed down until he was carted off the field. “It doesn’t look good,” St. Louis

Coach Steve Spagnuolo said. Bradford,comingoffhisbestgame,

had one of his worst. He was 23 of 45 for 215 yards with two interceptions, one that was batted into the air and caught by Ndamukong Suh and one directly to Alphonso Smith, who re- turned it for the final score.

BEARS 23, PANTHERS 6

Julius Peppers batted the pass

into the air, darted to his left and made a diving interception. It was the kind of acrobatic, freakishly athletic play Carolina fans routinely wit- nessed in his eight years with the Panthers. Only this time Peppers was wear-

ing a Chicago uniform, and it was one of the few impressive playsmade in a game that left Carolina fans booing both Peppers and the Panthers. Matt Forte rushed for 166 yards

and two touchdowns, Peppers led a ferocious defense and theBears over- came four interceptions by backup QB Todd Collins to beat the winless Panthers. Forte scored both his touchdowns

in the first quarter, during which Peppers silenced a booing crowd in his first game back to Carolina with his interception to set up a field goal. The Bears bounced back from an

ugly loss a week earlier against the New York Giants to do just enough to beat the Panthers, who again couldn’t move the ball with Jimmy Clausen at quarterback. With Jay Cutler sidelined with a

concussion, the 38-year-old Collins was immobile, shaky and inaccurate behind a reworked line. After allowing 10 sacks last week,

the Bears gave rookie J’MarcusWebb and Edwin Williams starts. The line produced some early holes for the running game and allowed only three sacks, but Chicago did nothing offen- sively after the first quarter with Collins making his first start since 2007 inWashington. He completed just 6 of 16 passes

before being benched for Caleb Hanie. Yet when Collins exited with a 6.3 passer rating, his team was ahead 17-6 because Clausen wasn’t much better before he, too, was benched. Former starter Matt Moore then threw two interceptions in relief. The Panthers managed 147 yards

as they continued their worst start since beginning 0-7 in 1998.
