The assistant chief executive of the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is warning small businesses against neglect- ing health and safety standards as Ireland emerges from the recession. Mary Dorgan’s advice comes as the HSA prepares to launch
a major initiative aimed at small firms in Ireland in early 2011. The Authority has been liaising with businesses and their
representatives, such as the Small Firms Association, as it attempts to look at issues from the perspective of owner man- agers.The final offering of the programme will be based on the consultation the HSA has with small firms. Dorgan says the initiative is being launched to recognise the
different market conditions that small firms are operating in at present, and to remind businesses that health-and-safety compliance is as important as ever. “We recognise the environment for doing business here is
very different now than three years ago,” she says. “Managing costs and the bottomline is a really big thing for business, but health and safety is a major part of that.This ini- tiative is taking the employer’s point of view, and highlighting that the prevention of accidents is an awful lot more cost- effective than after the fact.”
